- One of Santiago's chief character traits is one of patience and persistence. Despite going 84 days without catching a fish, he never gives up, nor does he complain, and he most certainly does not berate fate for his ill fortune. These qualities stand him in good stead when he faces a battle of wills with the Marlin. For him it is a test of strength and of character, a battle between himself and nature, which is illuminated by the way in which he seems to speak directly to the Marlin itself in the novella.
