How do you share holidays with your family and the inlaws?

My husband and I have families that live in the same area. Our parents live about 30 min apart from each other. However holidays are such a pain planning. How does your family split holidays and if you live in the same town what would you do if they planed say Thanksgiving dinner at the same time. (keep in mind there are siblings and extended families aunts uncles ect.) not just my parents and his parents. How does your family share or do holidays?

1. see both but schedule main visit on alternate years. first year with your parents for thanksgiving and his for christmas and reverse the next year
2. well they should consider that yall have to go to two differnt places and they should try to make it for differnt times. two hours shouldnt kill them.
3. When I was a kid we had (including my parents) three sets of aunts and uncles who would take turns each Christmas hosting the dinner at their respective houses, a kind of rotation if you will. Since most of my aunts and uncles have passed away (one aunt left, and my parents are still here) Christmas dinner seems to have gravitated to my oldest cousin who seems to want it that way anyway, and my side of the family goes to her house every year now. As for my wife's family, well my wife wants to spend Christmas dinner with her family this year, so we will probably drop by my cousins house for a while in the evening after we finish dinner at her sisters house and say Merry Christmas to everyone there. We get around the gift distribution issue by making sure that all of the gifties have been put under the recipients tree before Christmas morning. That is usually done on Christmas Eve where we run around exchanging packages until everyone has their gifts ready for Christmas Day. Like you all of our families live in the same city, so no one gets left out due to vast distances. The only issue then seems to be whom to visit first, and to pack in enough visits on Christmas Day so that no one gets all bent out of shape. Personally I don't know what the big deal is. We all live in the same city, and there's 364 other days in the year we can visit.
